Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem)

The V-Dem (Varieties of Democracy) Institute is a research institute hosted by the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg. V-Dem is one of the largest-ever social science data collection efforts and the recipient of the Lijphart/Przeworski/Verba Dataset Award 2016.

V-Dem offers a new approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy, it distinguishes between five high-level principles of democracy: electoral, liberal, participatory, deliberative, and egalitarian, and collects data to measure these principles.

Since April 2018, the 19 million data points dataset covers 201 countries from 1789-2017. The open source dataset is updated yearly and launched in April each year. The data is also available for online graphing on the project website.
