Admission to the PhD programme in Political Science occurs once a year. Open PhD positions are announced in early December of each year, and the deadline for application is usually in early February. Please see our website for the exact dates. The admission process runs from February to April, and a search committee reads and evaluates applications and interviews the top candidates. The admission decision is made in April, and the new PhD students start the programme in early September.

All open PhD positions are announced via the University’s job portal, and we only accept applications submitted through the portals.
We do not accept unsolicited applications.

In order to be eligible to be admitted to the PhD programme in Political Science, applicants have to fulfill general and specific entry requirements (see chapter 7 Higher Education ordinance). In short, you need to have at least 240 hec, 60 of which on advanced level, and 60 of which in Political Science or a related discipline.

Your application must be complete in order for us to be able to assess your eligibility, merits and skills. Beyond CV and motivation letter, we usually request the following documents:
- a working sample such as a thesis, working paper or article
- a project proposal on the intended subject of your dissertation
- proof of your academic record (transcripts or degree certificates)
More detailed information will be available on our website when the announcement is published. The selection process includes interviews, and we may ask applicants to provide letters of recommendation.

Applications are assessed and evaluated by a search committee within the Department. The selection is made with regard to the applicant’s ability to complete the programme. The search committee ranks and interviews potential candidates. The search committee’s suggestion is discussed with the supervisors’ committee, which consists of teachers and supervisors within the PhD programme. The decision on admission is made by the Head of Department.
