Double degree options

The Department of Political Science has signed agreements for double degree programmes with partner universities in Germany and China, we are about to sign a new double degree agreement with USA. This makes it possible for the department's master's students to study abroad for an entire academic year. In addition to the beneficial international experiences, these programmes will also result in double degrees for the students.

Internationalization is an important part of the work done at the Department of Political Science. This can take the form of helping students to develop international /global perspectives and gaining knowledge about international current events through reading literature from abroad, and by meeting both students and teachers from other countries. By signing these double degree agreements, the Department of Political Science has entered into a closer relationship with the two partner universities, Konstanz University in Germany and Fudan University in Shanghai, China. This makes it possible for students to study at some of the most highly-ranked universities in Germany and China. From the fall 2018 we will also offer a double degree option with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US.

Information about our three double degree options:

Pursuing a double degree means that a student who is enrolled in a two-year programme would spend one of the two years at one of the partner universities. One school year would be spent at the University of Gothenburg together with fellow students from the partner university. The other year would be spent at Konstanz University, Fudan University or University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Once the student has completed her/his studies, s/he would receive two distinct master's degrees - one from the University of Gothenburg, and one from a partner university. The valuable international experience that comes with studying abroad is a true advantage in today's global labor market.

Several of Europe's leading universities offer their students double degrees, including the University of Gothenburg, albeit on a smaller scale. This means that the Department of Political Science is now at the forefront of the university’s work to internationalize.

Urban Strandberg is the Director of Studies at the Centre for European Studies and has been instrumental in spearheading the agreements with the partner universities. Here is what he has to say about the importance of a cooperation like this:

– Isn’t it amazing that we can send our students to Germany, China or USA as part of the education we offer at the University of Gothenburg? And that our programmes are considered to be so attractive that we will also have students from these partner universities here in Gothenburg, as well. I think it says a lot about the Department of Political Science as a whole that we have not only managed to attract researchers from the world’s best universities, but that we now have an impressive cooperation happening with highly-ranked universities on the educational side, as well.

A chance for master students

The double degree with Germany and China can be applied to as part of the Master's Programme in Political Science (MAPS), the Master's Programme in European Studies (MAES), or the Master's Programme in International Administration and Global Governance (IAGG).

The double degree with USA will only be applied for as part of the Master's Programme in European Studies (MAES).

Sara studied for a year in Konstanz

In 2014 the first group of students who chose the Konstanz double degree travelled to German Universität Konstanz. Sara van der Meiden was one of them. When she came back to Gothenburg she brought with her new experiences from an international environment that offers both high quality studies but also fun spare time activities.
