Livia from Brazil wanted to learn more about the European integration process

News: Mar 20, 2019

Livia Radaeski is a second year student at the Master's Programme in European Studies. She enjoys its multidisciplinary nature and that it is possible for her to focus on areas of personal interest. To call Gothenburg home is a happy thing for her – she thinks the University of Gothenburg is an incredible place to study, not only because of its amazing staff, but also because of its modern and resourceful facilities.

What made you interested in the Master's Programme in European Studies (MAES)?

– Brazil is a multicultural and diverse country. When asking about someone's ancestry the reply tends to contain several European countries. That is why I was drawn to the Old World from an early age. After completing my bachelor's in International Relations, I was certain I wanted to continue my studies with a master's degree, but got a bit frustrated with the options available in Brazil. Although the region and its integration processes do present themselves as an interesting field of studies, I wanted to further understand the pioneering European integration process and the role of the Union in tackling recent challenges both at their doorsteps and worldwide. That is how I came across MAES!

If you were to encourage somebody to apply to the program, which attractive, strong features would you emphasize?

– I was first attracted to how well structured the program was. The first modules work as building blocks so the student can dive into the history, functioning, and current debates and challenges faced by the EU. The program is multidisciplinary and it is possible to focus on areas of personal interest and tailor your research according to what you find most intriguing and worthy of serious investigation. In addition, the program also pays attention to the possibilities after the degree is finished, preparing the students for a career in academia through solid methods courses, or the public/private sector with the possibility of internships within the program.

What advice would you give somebody who is starting the program and wants to get the most out of it?

– To really take part in and engage with all the activities, the program and the department have to offer. Besides its international collaborations and partnerships with other academic institutions, the program provides an excellent platform to exchange ideas with students, professors, researchers, public figures with different backgrounds and from all over the world. Extra-curricular activities such as being directly involved with or simply attending the lectures organized by Brännpunkt Europa have proven to be fruitful not only for the academic discussion but for networking purposes. In addition, of course, do not be afraid to speak up, ask questions, and be a part of the debate, either in the classroom or in lectures and seminars.

What is your opinion on the University of Gothenburg and the city of Gothenburg?

– The University of Gothenburg is an incredible place to study, not only because of its amazing staff, but also because of its modern and resourceful facilities. It also offers its students many opportunities to engage with extra-curricular activities and academic assistance. Additionally, it is great to be part of an institution that is environmentally conscious and committed with sustainable development. This is not a surprise, since Gothenburg is ranked as one of the most sustainable cities in the world and it is only natural to impart this on its educational institutions. Because of this and much more I am incredibly proud and happy to call Gothenburg home!
