Jörgen Westerståhl Lecture 2019

Lecture

Welcome to the Jörgen Westerståhl Lecture 2019 with Professor Colin Hay: "Homo politicus and the "problem of agency": the missing subject of modern political science". Registration not needed.

There are growing or recurrent cleavages within political science in terms of what drives agency and contending explanations to political and social behavior. For a couple of decades now we have witnessed a sustained argument between advocates of rational choice on the one hand and proponents of various institutional approaches on the other. There is also a growing group of scholars with a constructivist approach to political science issues. These conceptual and theoretical choices dovetail to some degree with methodological and research strategical choices. The question is whether contemporary political science is a "discipline divided" or whether what we in fact have is a healthy pluralism in terms of theoretical approaches and empirical research strategies.

Lecturer: Colin Hay is one of the top European political scientists of our time, sharing his time between Sheffield University, Sciences Po in Paris and the EUI in Florence. His work covers a broad range of political science, including political economy, political ideology and globalization studies. He has also published extensively on the political science discipline as such, reflecting on the quality and relevance of contemporary political science analyses. He is a prolific writer; his most recent (post-2012) publications include 11 books and about as many articles. He has received major research grants from the ESRC and from the Leverhulme Trust in Britain. He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including The Richard Rose Prize, the WJM MacKenzie Award and the Philip Abrams Memorial Award.
