About Valeriya Mechkova

Presentation

PhD candidate at the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, within the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project since the autumn of 2016.

In my dissertation I focus on how government accountability and political representation affect human development outcomes such as economic growth, infant and maternal mortality. I am particularly interested in the representation of minority groups and female's political representation.

In terms of technical skills, I specialize in time-series cross-sectional data analysis.

I am working part-time with the policy and outreach program of the V-Dem Institute. I am team leader on long-term consultancy project commissioned by USAID, which re-visits the issues of democracy, governance, and human rights, through producing research papers, country and regional analyses. I am also leading the work of the V-Dem input to the Post-2015 development agenda and measurement of Sustainable Development Goal 16. I have worked as consultant for the World Bank, Community of Democracies, and International IDEA.

Previously I worked as V-Dem’s analyst and data operations manager, starting from May 2013 until August 2016.
