About Göran Duus-Otterström

Göran received his PhD in political science from the University of Gothenburg in 2008 on a thesis on justice in punishment. After a postdoc at the University of Warwick (2008-2009), he returned to the department to work as a research fellow in a project on climate justice. In 2012, he took up a permanent position in the department as Lecturer. Later the same year he was declared Docent by the University of Gothenburg (roughly, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor). In 2013 he held a visiting position at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland.

As of 2017, Göran is on partial leave from the department to take up a position as Associate Professor of Political Science at Aarhus University. He is also an affiliated reseacher in the Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm, and an associate editor at Res Publica. His book Klimatetik: Rättvisa, Politik, och Individens Ansvar, co-authored with Bengt Brülde, was recently published by Thales. For more on the book, click here.

Göran is currently finishing up a project called “Fair Play Retributivism and the Problem of Punishment”, funded by the Swedish Research Council. He recently won another grant from the Swedish Research Council entitled "Pollution-Based Climate Justice: Sources, Thresholds, Patterns", and he is co-pi of the research programme "Climate Ethics and Future Generations", which is funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. In the past, he been awarded several research grants from funders such as the Swedish Research Council and Formas. In 2008 he won the Nils-Eric Svensson travel grant from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation.

Göran works in the field of normative political theory, more specifically the theory of justice. His research interests are wide-ranging, and he has published on topics such as punishment, climate change, and political obligation. Recurrent themes of his work have been to investigate the relationship between personal responsibility and justice, and to analyse the consequences of incomplete information and human fallibility for the justification of exercises of public power. His papers have been published in journals such as Contemporary Political Theory, Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy, Criminal Law and Philosophy, Environmental Politics, Global Environmental Change, Law and Philosophy, and Social Theory and Practice.

Göran mostly teaches contemporary political thought and normative analysis. For the academic year 2017/2018 he is teaching:

SK2111: Perspectives on Politics
SK1123: Politisk teori och internationell politik (course director)
SK2121: Political Science Analysis

Göran has extensive experience supervising bachelor, master and doctoral students writing on political theory broadly construed. Inquiries regarding supervision are welcome.
