About Linda Berg

Linda Berg, PhD, is senior lecturer in political science and director of the Centre for European Research, University of Gothenburg (CERGU).

She was a visiting fellow (postdoc) to the Institute of Governance, School of Political and Social Studies, University of Edinburgh, Scotland 2007-2008.

Linda defended her dissertation 12 October 2007. The title is: Multi-level Territorial Attachments. The Influence of Territorial Attachments on Political Trust and Welfare Attitudes.

Area of interests

Linda's main research interest concerns different aspects of the European integration process from a multi-level perspective, especially identification, political trust, welfare, migration, EU, and political cleavages. She is, together with Henrik E. Oscarsson, responsible for the Election study of the European Parliament Election in 2014. She has also studied regional elections, local and regional authorities connections to the EU, and is a member of the board for SNES, Swedish Network for European Studies in Political Science.

Current research

At the moment Linda has a number of different research projects. One of these, together with Andrea Spehar, is about migration, especially political steering of migration issues and integration of migranter. Another project is about political cleavages, focusing on the case of the wolf issue, together with Maria Solevid (Formas). In addition, she continues to work on the relationship between territorial identities and welfare attitudes in Europe (VR project). Furthermore, she is part of the Swedish National Election Studies Program and writes about the European Union Parliament elections and regional elections.

Teaching and tutoring

Linda's teaching is mainly concentrated to the two European studies programmes (Bachelor and Master). She was actively working for the development of the two-year Master's of European Studies Programme (since 2010), and developed, and was responsible for (2010-2013), the course "Integrating European Market", with prof. Claes Alvstam, economic geography, within the master's programme.

At the Bachelor's Programme she is responsible for the Thesis course (10 weeks), as well as the development of the prize-awarded course "Practical EU-knowledge" (10 weeks) with among others the European Documentation Centre librarians. She has also developed a new course "Modern European Integration II" (10 weeks), taught at the second year from spring 2013.

Linda is also tutoring and examining a large number of theses, master's and bachelor's, as well as developing and teaching at other courses. In both 2011 and 2012 she was rewarded the individual education prize from the student union for her contributions at the European studies programmes.

Furthermore, Linda also participates in courses in political science and social science (Comparative European politics); higher education courses for university teachers; and she has been teaching on European integration at the Higher Vocational Education and Training Programme “EU Project Coordinator”. In addition, she has written a textbook on the EU and the Welfare of Europe (together with Andrea Spehar).

Linda's reseach is published in many different forms, as journal articles: Policy Studies, European Perspectives on Politics and Society, book contributions: e.g. in Regional and Nationa Elections in Western Europe (Palgrave 2013), conference papers, as well as a large number of Swedish chapters, edited books, reports and popular scientific articles.
