About Markus Johansson

Areas of interest

European integration, EU politics, EU institutions, decision-making in the EU Council, negotiation theory, the common EU foreign policy, collective action.

Current research

I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for European Research (CERGU), with placement at the department of political science. I am also part of the Centre for Collective Action Research (CeCAR).
My postdoc project deals with what effects it has if states that are part of international agreements (here the EU) fail to comply with the jointly agreed rules of that organization. Based in the assumption that states will only make joint decisions if they also believe that they will be implemented, I aim to test if and under what circumstances this assumption holds. The project focuses empirically on negotiation processes of EU member states in the EU Council of Ministers.
Also in my dissertation from 2015 I studied Council of Minister negotiations, by exploring how the representatives of EU member state governments use domestic constraints in negotiations. In the dissertation I investigated how domestic constraints are communicated, by which negotiators, and whether it leads to influence.
In both my postdoc project and PhD project I have worked with survey data including member state negotiators to the EU Council of Ministers, and that deals with issues of cooperation and negotiations in this institution. The data has been gathered every three years since 2003, and I have worked with data gathering and analyses together with Daniel Naurin and Rutger Lindahl in the rounds conducted in 2012, 2015 and 2018. In addition, I have also done research on leadership in EU foreign policy in a project led by Lisbeth Aggestam.

Teaching

I teach mainly at the Bachelor and Master level programs in European studies focused on European politics and European Union affairs. I also supervise and grade Bachelor and Master theses.
