Svetla studies EMAES to boost her professional career

From my point of view, the program is useful for people who are interested in research, but also for those engaged in the decision-making process and implementation of decisions at different levels: EU, national, and subnational, says Svetla Tsolova student on the Executive Master's Programme in European Studies.

What made you interested in the Executive Master's Programme in European Studies (EMAES)?

– The themes covered in the study are interesting. I want to get a more comprehensive knowledge on the foundations and functioning of the European union, the legal framework and different aspects and roles of EU. The mode of the program – distance learning with a number of face-to-face meetings - is also quite suitable for a working professionals who would like to further develop their career opportunities. I currently work in an European Union institution. I do believe that the program is useful for deepening my knowledge on specific features of European integration, legal basis for the free movement of goods, services, people and capital. It is fascinating to learn more about the characteristics of the decision making process at the EU level.

If you were to encourage somebody to apply to the program, which attractive, strong features would you emphasize?

– In my opinion, the program is useful for people who are interested in research, but also for those engaged in the decision-making process and implementation of decisions at different levels. It provides a forum for discussions and for sharing both EU and member countries perspectives. I think that the program is well balanced with theoretical aspects, methodological approaches and group discussions on practical implementation of concepts and principles of European integration.

How do you think the program will contribute to your professional life?

– I hope I can grow in my professional carrier. I currently work in the area of public health, but once I finish the master programme I believe that I will have possibilities to expand my expertise to broader European matters.

What advice would you give somebody who is starting the program and wants to get the most out of it?

– The program is intensive and one has to allow sufficient time to read the suggested literature. In order to take the best out of the program, one has to have the possibility to familiarize with the subject matters, analytical discourse and relevant methodological aspects.

What is your opinion on the University of Gothenburg and the city of Gothenburg?

– The university provides great opportunities for a study – with good library and online resources. The researchers and professors, which are engaged in the program, are open and provide opportunities for good discussions. They are helpful when we have questions and queries, and indeed very enthusiastic on what they teach. A good atmosphere during the face-to-face meeting is also needed and our professors try to do their best to keep us proactive during the discussions.

The city of Goteborg is nice, student and visitor friendly, full with diverse cultural and social events. It offers opportunities to refresh after a long study day, by utilizing good public spaces such as parks, libraries and museums, to enjoy a good cup of coffee or to have delicious seafood, served in a friendly manner.
