Tell us shortly about your master thesis

My thesis investigates the reasons why defence integration is difficult for the EU to achieve. The research question focuses on defence integration and not on security aspects. I employed the inter-governmentalism theory of integration as a data collection guide and to answer the research question. The analysis and discussion is heavily influenced by recent developments in the EU defence integration area with a special linkage to the December 2017 EU Council Decision on permanent structured cooperation (PESCO).

The paper analysed opportunities and challenges that can be born from PESCO; the pros- and cons of NATO in EU defence integration; the impact of European defence clusters that are mushrooming outside the EU framework; the challenges linked to EU decision making procedures, institutional infighting, fear of deployment failures and the normative soft side of the EU. I used the examples of France, Germany and the United Kingdom to analyse how the actions of these EU power brokers can shape the outcomes of efforts aimed at achieving EU defence integration.

In a nutshell the findings of the thesis support the inter-governmentalist notion that defence integration is a high politics area which is dependent on the willingness of EU member states to pool their sovereignty together and form an EU army. PESCO is a route towards the long march to the dream of an EU army but the path is littered with challenges which are best explained by the inter-governmentalist theory as my thesis explains.

What content or course within the program did you value the most?

The cornerstone of the master program is the research methods course especially aspects like content analysis methods, interviews and SPSS. The nucleus of the master programme are the parts dealing with theories of European integration (inter-governmentalists, multi-level governance, functionalists, etc.), European law (e.g. direct effect, CJEU cases, moot court) the Social dimensions in Europe, EU as a global actor (in security, migration & economics) and the research methods integrated throughout all the courses. The Master thesis is the epitome that helps to put all the skills leant into practice. The teachers were masters in their disciplines of operations.

What would you say was the hardest part of the EMAES-program?

One need to read and concentrate carefully if one does not have a background in SPSS. If one reads the recommended books and do the assignments one will be so happy to see that SPSS is vital in social science research, usable and doable. It will be, for example, much easier to interpret Eurobarometer data after doing the SPSS course.

What advice can you offer on how to best manage to combine full time work with the EMAES-program? How did you do to succeed?

The supreme limitation to your yearnings comes from within. The only way to manage full-time work and the EMAES program is your will do it irrespective of other events along the way. Submit almost all assignments on or before deadline. Acquire all required course literature as soon as possible and start. Follow the electronic learning portal very often for instructions, data and uploaded lectures.

In what way do you think the program will contribute to your professional career? What is your plan for the future?

The research methods course and the assignments make one to be a seasoned analyst especially when one is working with issues that need projections, programme management and cross-organisational cooperations. The course consolidates and opens one’s doors to diverse options in the policymaking, implementation and research fields.
