The Master’s Programme in Political Science offers academic training closely tied to internationally advanced research carried out at the Department of Political Science. It provides highly sought for expertise within global- and domestic politics, public administration and civil society.
This expertise includes the quality of government and corruption, the main features, actors and performance of democracy, the process of democratization, social dilemmas, political institutions and environmental politics. The Master's Programme in Political Science is a state of the art education that prepares you for a professional career with advanced analysis of politics and society as a central element. Political scientists typically work within the field of research and investigation, power monitoring, public opinion formation, public administration, or politics. The degree also gives qualification to apply for doctoral studies in Political Science. Examples of workplaces for our previous students are Amnesty, Mission of Sweden to Nato, Region Västra Götaland and Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Master's Programme in Political Science is a two year education organized in four semesters leading to a Master of Science (120 hec) with a major in Political Science.
The first semester
Course work in the first semester explores the major analytical perspectives of the discipline: rationalism, institutionalism and constructivism. It provides advanced knowledge of main research areas of contemporary political science within political behavior, comparative politics, public administration, political theory and international politics.
The second semester
The second semester consists of in-depth courses, including electoral studies and public opinion, the quality of political institutions and corruption, social dilemmas and environmental politics, and democracy and democratization (2 x 15 hec). All in-depth courses rely on strong research-profiles at the department , which means that students develop their academic skills by the help of dedicated professors who are prominent within their field.
The third semester
The third semester offers, first, the choice between electives, including further in-depth studies in political science, or doing an internship in a private or public organization (15 hec), and, second, the choice between advanced studies in either statistical analysis or qualitative research methods (15 hec). Students will gain from the long-time held emphasis on the importance of research design and method to empirical investigation that is a distinctive feature of the research carried out at the department.
The forth semester
The completion of the programme, the research project of the Master’s thesis in the forth semester, enables application and further development of the theoretical and methodological skills gained (30 hec). Researchers with an international reputation in their field or expertise and with solid experience of guiding research-projects are available as advisors.
The education offers two double degree options, the first co-operation is with University of Konstanz (separate application code) and the other is with Fudan University in Shanghai. During the first semester of the first year of the programme, students can apply for the Double Degree Programme with Fudan University. If accepted, the student will complete their second year at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University in Shanghai, and receive a Master’s degree from both universities.
