Centre for European Studies (CES)

The Centre for European Studies (CES) is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between nine different subjects spread across eight departments and three faculties at the University of Gothenburg.

In 1999, researchers from the University of Gothenburg, who were focusing on Europe, took the initiative of starting what was to become the European Studies Programme. The background to this was the recent Swedish membership in the EU which created a need for persons with deep knowledge of Europe and the EU. The purpose was to offer prospective students a multi-disciplinary programme which integrated historic, political, sociological and economic perspectives on European integration.

Initially, the programme was a four-year master’s (magister in Swedish) degree programme, but after the Bologna process came into force in 2007 the programme was split into two, the three-year Bachelor’s programme (European Studies Programme, only in Swedish) and the two-year Master’s programme (Master’s Programme in European Studies).

CES is situated at the Department of Political Science and has a close connection to CERGU (Centre for European Research at Gothenburg University).
