About Ketevan Bolkvadze

Presentation

PhD Candidate at the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg (2013 - )

I have a Master’s degree (cum laude) in European Studies from Maastricht University, the Netherlands, and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Tbilisi State University, Georgia. These studies were funded by merit-based scholarships from the Open Society Foundation and the Government of Georgia, respectively.

Before joining the Department of Political Science in Gothenburg, I was a visiting research fellow at Goethe University Frankfurt. There, in the framework of the research project “EuroGaps”, I contributed with a book chapter to an edited volume on external perceptions of the European Union. I have also served as a research assistant to Professor Frank Schimmelfennig at ETH Zürich, where I collected data on Georgia’s legislative harmonization with the EU, for the project ‘Differentiated Integration in the European Union’.

Beyond these academic positions I have worked as a Parliamentary Assistant for Transparency International (in Tbilisi), and interned at the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (in the Hague) as well as at the U.S. National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (in Tbilisi).
I am currently working on an article that delves into the politics of bureaucratic reform in hybrid regimes.

Areas of interest

Hybrid regime politics, competitive authoritarianism, judicial politics in transition, bureaucratic reforms, external democracy promotion, EU conditionality.
